Love and marriage

Monday, 21 December, 2009 @ 7:30 PM

I officially married Thinn Nunu Aung on December 5th, 2009, in a short civil ceremony on the lawn of The Barnacle, an historic mansion in Coral Gables, Miami. We were accompanied by a handful of Thinny's friends, as well as two of mine who happened to be in Miami at the time. Once we'd signed the papers and the ceremony was done, we cracked a couple of bottles of Möet to celebrate, then jumped around taking some photos before heading across the road to lunch in a local restaurant.

It was all planned at very short notice, but turned out to be about as perfect a day as I could imagine. Lots of fun and laughter, and even a little splash of rain that appeared at the end couldn't ruin things.

Thinny posted a bunch of pics here, and there are some more on Facebook here, and yet more that were taken with my camera which (typically) haven't even been downloaded from the card yet.

The 2009 Atlantic Hurricane season officially ended yesterday. With no strikes in Cayman and indeed only nine named storms – of which just three reached hurricane force – this has been the quietest season for over 10 years. Cheers to that!

News

It's been a long while since I posted here. Plenty has been going on in my life, so I'll briefly try to summarise the highlights here, and perhaps if I find time I'll get to go back and flesh the details out later on.

OK, the biggest news first: I'm getting married this coming weekend. The young lady in question is a lovely Burmese girl called Thinn. We met in January this year, and since then have been pretty much inseparable (as much as living in different countries allows!). I proposed on Halloween night (October 31st), and we're going to have a small no-frills wedding in Miami this Saturday. We've gotten on amazingly well right from the start, so I'm pretty excited about this development.

The idea is to hold a slightly more ornate reception early next year, for family and friends who can make it.

We've made a number of trips in the last few months, mostly to Miami and its environs (Naples, the Everglades, West Palm Beach and the Florida Keys), but also a very interesting long weekend in Jamaica where we climbed Blue Mountain Peak – Jamaica's highest point and the highest peak in the Caribbean outside of Hispaniola (which has FIVE higher).

I moved into a great new apartment – WAY cosier than the place I've been living for the past 18 months, although not so close to the ocean which is a shame. I also upgraded my transportation, with a newer Land Cruiser (1994 80-series) and a sexy titanium Moots YBB mountain bike which I hope to bring back from Miami this weekend.

I also did my PADI Advanced Open Water dive course, and completed a six week drawing class at the National Gallery, both of which were pretty good fun. I injured my shoulder playing softball earlier in the year, so had to pull out of the team for most of the season. It seems to be pretty well healed now though, so I managed to make the last 3 games of the season. I've also been playing squash most Tuesdays, which helps keep things flexible.

A bit of sad news came recently when I heard that my great Aunt and Uncle passed away within two weeks of each other, Joan at 90 (?) and John at 97, after 65 years of marriage. I didn't know them super well, however they were the last of that generation that I'm aware of. Life is cyclical however, and a new generation is already starting…

Well, that's about it for now. As I mentioned above, I'll try to go into a bit more detail about some of these events before too long.
